And we do strange, sometimes dangerous things to protect ourselves when we're scared.

The Vena El'ni start to grow thorns when they feel they are in danger, especially when that feeling persists for some time. Being trapped on a ship with sentient darkness and shadows, famous for genocide, certainly assists in making someone scared.
